This is my opinion on which music theory topics are actually relevant to producers. There's a lot of theory out there, most of it you don't need. This roadmap helps you narrow it down and focus on what matters.

This is not a full explanation of each topic, just what it is, why it matters, and what you should know first.
Month 1 The fundamentals

Basic Rhythms

What it is Understanding tempo, time signatures, and note lengths (quarter, eighth, sixteenth notes)
Why it matters Every song is built on rhythm. Without this, everything will feel off.

Basic Chords

What it is Major, minor, and diminished triads. How to build them from any root note.
Why it matters Chords are the foundation of harmony. Every song uses them.

Common Chord Progressions

What it is Popular patterns like I-IV-V-I, I-V-vi-IV, and ii-V-I. Roman numeral notation.
Why it matters These patterns appear in nearly all songs. They are the shared vocabulary of music.

Month 2 Adding color

Major & Minor Scales

What it is The two most important scales. A set of 7 notes that sound good together.
Why it matters Scales tell you which notes are "safe" to use. No more guessing.

Seventh Chords

What it is Adding a 4th note to triads: maj7, min7, and dominant 7 chords.
Why it matters Most common extended chord. Used in every genre, but particularly R&B, jazz, etc.

Pentatonic Scales

What it is 5-note scales (major and minor pentatonic) that are almost impossible to sound bad.
Why it matters Makes writing melodies easy.

Chord Inversions

What it is Playing the same chord with different notes on the bottom (root, 1st, 2nd inversion).
Why it matters Makes your chords sound real instead of stiff.

Month 3 Advanced techniques

Extended Chords

What it is 9th, 11th, and 13th chords. More notes, richer sounds.
Why it matters The sound behind neo-soul, jazz, and modern R&B harmony.

Circle of Fifths

What it is A visual map showing how all 12 keys relate to each other.
Why it matters Shows you which chords progress well together. Makes it easy to change keys.

Voice Leading

What it is Moving smoothly between chords by minimizing note movement.
Why it matters The difference between amateur and pro-sounding progressions.
